Special Educational Needs & Disabilities

Welcome to the Special Education Needs and Disabilities section of our website.  All schools have a legal duty to publish information on their websites about the implementation of the governing body’s policy for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities.

Here you will find information about the provision that we offer at Winnersh Primary School to support children with special educational needs or disabilities, as well as access to links to documents, reports, workshops and resources.

What are Special Educational Needs and Disabilities?

Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, or SEND, is a term that is used to describe pupils who have needs over and above those that can be met by good quality classroom teaching. These needs may be within communication and interaction; cognition and learning; social and emotional health; or sensory and/or physical difficulties. They may be for a short period or throughout a child’s educational life. They may be identified before a child has even entered school or they may come to be recognised at a specific point in their education.

Here at Winnersh Primary School, we recognise that all children are different and may have a range of learning needs.  We strive to meet the needs of all our SEND children through targeted interventions and by using a wide range of strategies designed to meet their differing needs.  Staff have experience in many different areas of SEND and are supported by dedicated teaching assistants.  Progress is tracked regularly and all interventions are monitored for evidence of impact. Movement in and out of these programmes is flexible and responsive to pupil need.  We strive to make inclusion a thread that runs through all of the activities of the school.

We have some trained nurture assistants who can offer targeted emotional support when needed, for example if there has been a bereavement or a change in family circumstances.  They can also deliver programmes that help to support children to manage a range of emotions that may be impacting on their daily life.

Rainbow Room

Rainbow Room may be used to deliver individual and group interventions at times.  The SENDCo also runs Rainbow Club 4 times a week from 12:15 to 1:00pm (four days per week) to support children who need more structure during their lunchtimes and who benefit from a quieter and calmer environment.

Sensory Circuits

Some children have a variety of sensory issues and the SENDCo runs Sensory Circuits each morning from 08:30 to 08:45am.  Sensory Circuits help the children’s bodies and minds to become more alert and awake.  It is a great way to prepare them for the start of their school day.  It also encourages independence as the children take ownership of their own individual visual programme.
