Year 1

Welcome to Year 1

We have two classes – Sky and Ocean

Our Teachers are Miss Head and Miss Stratford

Our Learning Support Assistants are Mrs Gilbert and Miss Bardwell

We work as a team so your child may be taught by any or all of us at points through the year, but generally Miss Stratford and Mrs Gilbert are based in Sky Class while Miss Head and Miss Bardwell are based in Ocean Class.

Year One is a really important year where children move away from the Early Years curriculum and into Key Stage One of the National Curriculum. This transition is really important to us and we are careful to ensure that the children start the year with some informal learning through play and small group activities, moving towards more formal lessons as the year goes on so that they are ready for the challenges of Year Two by the summer term.

Your child will enjoy some exciting and adventurous topics during their time with us, all designed to build their confidence in tackling the core skills of reading, writing and maths, while keeping an emphasis on curiosity, creativity, practical activities and fun.

Our PE days in Year One are Tuesday and Thursday and PE kits will be sent home every week to be washed. Reading books will be changed on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Please could you sign the book when you have read with your child. Children should bring in their reading books and reading records every day please.

In Year One, once the children have settled in, we will be sending home short phonics tasks and Buzz Time maths skills to practice. This will begin after the first half term.

We hope that children gain independence, confidence and maturity during their time with us! Should you have any questions about our learning please don’t hesitate to ask one of the team.
